Foolish in their unwisdom

I thought at the time that exchanges such as this one would cinch the Presidency for Romney. How foolish of me! I had neglected to take into account the appaling ignorance of a great majority of the American people. Foolish, in not knowing and understanding history. Foolish, in allowing themselves such abject mental dysfunction as pertains to the dangers facing this country. Foolish, in choosing fluff over real substance. Foolish in their unwisdom, and in that unwisdom, selecting one like unto themselves, rather than one whose wisdom was so readily apparent in these exchanges.

The purity which white connotes

To see two of my children in the House of the Lord, dressed in white, and the purity which that connotes, the Lord, dressed in white, and the purity which that connotes, brought me to tears. They desire, as do I, to greater happiness, and a joy which exceeds mortal life. Over the portals of each temple are these words: “Holiness to the Lord, the House of the Lord” In this sacred place, couples are married not “until death do you part,” but, on condition of obedience, “for time and for all eternity.” Covenants are entered into here, regarding personal purity and peace within through obedience to God’s commands. This is indeed a sacred place.

Without quibble, doubt, or equivocation

The title page of the book informs us that its purpose is for “the convincing of the Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God.” The book is comprised of 6,607 verses. More than half of those verses, 3,925 of them, refer to Christ as the Son of God, the Redeemer of the world, the Only Begotten of the Father, and nearly a hundred other titles. Indeed, it boldly declares: “We preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” (2 Nephi 25:26) That book is the Book of Mormon, and it is, without quibble, doubt, or equivocation, another testament of Jesus Christ.

A saving labor

Three people I dearly love: my son in law Steven Skola, my daughter Elizabeth. (Skola), and my son Chris. Jr. We were at the Oquirrh Mountains Temple. Note the legend, “Holiness to the Lord, the House of the Lord” just above the column of glass, for indeed the temple is a sacred place. Entrance therein is gained only by those members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints worthy to hold a temple recommend. Therein are families sealed together for time and for eternity. Therein is a saving labor performed for beloved.ancestors, those who passed from this life without hearing the Gospel, but who would have received it had it been available to them. While the work may be performed for them vicariously, free agency prevails on the other side of the veil; they may accept or reject the labor performed in their behalf. Such labors are ill interpreted by those of profane mind. Indeed, we recall the Lord’s words to Isaiah: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9)

Do you see what I see?

Do you see what I see? I am on a hill looking south, and it is beautiful! At the bottom of this hill runs York Creek, from West to East. There shall run a road parallel to it. Beyond the road will be homes and churches, one every four blocks, and back behind me I feel, somewhat north east of me, a building more magnificent in its splendor and purpose than the rest. Do you see what I see? He who has eyes to see, let him see, and profane it not.

On the Lord’s errand

I felt impressed, late one evening, to call a man I had great respect for. He was weeping, this strong man carrying many burdens, this great leader in righteousness, some twenty years my senior in age. As we spoke I assured him of the love I had for him, and of the love and admiration of so many who knew him, because of his kindness and life of unselfish service to others. Between sobs, he thanked me. Oh yes, he was a man who understood the value of gratitude; he was grateful I had called! Later his wife told me that I would not know in this life how much that call meant to him. He is gone now, but his memory is forever engraved in the hearts of so many who were touched by his example. And I shall ever be grateful, that to me was extended the privilege of calling him in his moment of need, and in that moment, to lighten his load. How blessed we shall be, if we do not ignore the promptings to reach out to another in need. In that moment, we are on the Lord’s errand.

The child, Juan Chapa Gutierrez

The child, (pictured below, circa 1929) now grown old, was interred today, the 27th of August, 2014. The service on the evening prior to burial was simple but heartfelt. It was not the service accorded heads of state. Not present were the cameras and lights, nor the crowds and hoopla available for the rich and famous. The recent death of an actor, on the other hand was bewailed nation wide. The press could not be stilled concerning him. Thousands attended his funeral. The services for Juan Chapa Gutierrez on the other hand, barely rated an obit notice in a small town’s paper. Nor were there many in attendance. But one thing could be said about Juan Chapa Gutierrez which cannot be said for many a head of state, or many of the rich and famous, or the much talked about actor. Juan was a man of integrity. He preached Christian values, and he lived them. The little boy, Juan Gutierrez, seen in the photograph carrying his box of animal crackers, was born on March 28, 1926, to Manuel Gutierrez and Juliana Chapa in the vicinity of what is today Buda, Texas. All his life he was a devotee of hard work. Beginning as a young boy in the cotton fields he progressed to work in a bakery, as a projector handler in a theatre, and 42 years in a textile mill. He first noticed his wife Irma when she was 7 and he was 14, When she turned 17, he married her, and the two remained husband and wife until his passing 64 years later, becoming in the process the parents and grandparents of four children, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. No, not a lot of hoopla for Juan Chapa Gutierrez, who lived what he preached, and when any man had aught against him, he answered by turning to his Bible to explain to the man why he ought not be angry. Perhaps his favorite scripture verses defines him best “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13: 34-35) Yes, John loved even those who would be his enemies, forgiving them, and turning them with kind words. Many of the rich and famous who have died have had more people involved in planning their funerals than attended the funeral of Juan Chapa Gutierrez. The difference is that Juan was morally upright to the end, which came on August 20, 2014. He died at age 88, his integrity still intact, and his strong Christian values uncompromised. It is not the size of the funeral procession, nor the glizt of the affair which will matter before the Judge of all righteousness. One is reminded of the beggar, Lazarus, who desired to be fed of the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. When the two died, Lazarus was carried by angels, to Abraham’s bosom, while the rich man lay tormented in hell. (Luke 16: f20-26) The roles were now reversed. Shall it not be so for Juan Chapa Gutierrez, a man of integrity to the end of his days?

This beautiful room in the San Antonio Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is known as the celestial room. It symbolizes the indescribable joy and inner peace we may achieve through obedience to the commandments of the Lord, and ultimately as eternal families in the presence of our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.

Alien to the faith my mother taught me

One will cry, “Mother! When came I to shun thy wisdom, and the goodness of thy ways? Let me apply repentance now where needed, and learn wisdom while there is time, lest the grief and bitterness of regret be more than I can bear!”

“I’m an alien, to the faith my mother taught me.
I’m a stranger to the God that heard my mother when she cried.
I’m an alien to the comfort that, “Now I lay me,” brought me.
To the everlasting arms that held my father when he died.
When the great world came and called me, I deserted all to follow.
Never noting in my blindness I had slipped my hand from His.
Never dreaming in my dazedness that the bubble fame is hollow.
That the wealth of gold is tinsel, as I since have learned it is.
I have spent a lifetime seeking things I spurned when I found them,
I have fought and been rewarded in many a winning cause,
But I’d give it all, fame and fortune and the pleasures that surround them,
If I only had the faith that made my mother what she was.” (unk author)

If ye love Me…

The crowning characteristic of our love of Jesus Christ has been, is, and always will be, loyalty to Him. And how do we demonstrate that? He spoke of that plainly for those who will hear, putting it thus: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) We may proclaim all the day long, and loudly, our love for Jesus, but at some time there must come that still small voice whispering quietly to our mind and heart, the words of the Prophet Samuel to those feigning righteousness: “Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)
